Taken from today's devotion in Luke 5:1-11
"...but because you say so, I will let down the nets (vs.5)... when they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break (vs.6)... then Jesus said to Simon, '...from now on you will catch men.'(vs.10) So they... left everything and followed Him. (vs.11)"
Simon had been doing his job for a long time and pretty well knew what he was doing. After a long night of fishing with no luck, Jesus tells him to cast out his net and Simon does it because Jesus told him to. After seeing the catch that came he left everything to follow Jesus. He saw with his own eyes what working with Jesus can do. Working with Jesus, not just for him. When we work "for" someone, it can be more of a job, but when we work "with" someone it is more of a partnership, a shared interest. We do it because we believe in what we're doing.
This model brought an image to my mind:
I saw a foreman in a warehouse. One who has a passion for this warehouse and its purpose. He brings on a new employee and shows him around. Shows him how to do the job. He shows him where the tools are and where the instruction manual is. He also shows him things to be careful of so he doesn't get hurt. He is there to answer questions and demonstrate. He is there to encourage. He is there correct. He is there to talk to and be a friend. When the employee sustains an injury, he is there to give first aide and tell him how he can avoid getting hurt again. They work together in this warehouse and the employee begins to share the foreman's passion... they take pride in what it's purpose is and through this, those who they serve see a difference and are better for it.
From Beth Moore: "Jesus doesn't need our help. He could save the world through dreams and visions if he chose to, but he doesn't. He delights in asking us to join Him. I am convinced that every believer is summoned by Christ to work with Him here on earth."
So, what am I doing with this? Am I working "for" Jesus or am I working "with" him?
He is that foreman and he wants me to work with Him. I accept the invitation today! and every day. Will you?
Thank you Jesus for asking me along this journey with you... lead me and guide me. I'm excited to be working with you!
